Kenting Tourism Faces Historic Decline Amid Strategic Rebranding And Rising Global Recognition For Taipei And Orchid Island

The current state of Kenting tourism has been observed to reach historic lows for the second consecutive year, according to recent data released regarding the 2025 calendar year. This significant downturn has been noted to impact local hotels and various commercial entities that are typically supported by a consistent flow of domestic tourists within the region. It was reported that a total of 2.139 million visitors were recorded in the area last year, which represents a marginal decrease from the 2.14 million individuals documented in 2024. This trend is viewed with concern when compared to the historical peak reached in 2015, during which the Hengchun Peninsula welcomed approximately 8.37 million people. While a temporary increase in visitor numbers was noted during the long weekends of October, the overall annual figures remained below the threshold of 2.2 million for the second year in a row.

The occupancy rates for lodging establishments throughout the Hengchun Peninsula have been described as dismal. It was highlighted that only a single hotel was able to maintain an average occupancy rate exceeding 60 percent throughout the previous year. Significant changes in the local infrastructure were also noted, including the permanent closure of Uni-Resort Kenting. Additionally, Fullon Hotel Kenting, recognized as one of the largest hospitality providers in the district, has been temporarily shuttered to facilitate extensive renovations. While these renovations are presented as facility upgrades, speculation has been voiced by industry observers suggesting that such measures might serve as a form of damage control in response to the prolonged slump in visitor interest.

The reduction in foot traffic has been attributed to several external and internal factors. Criticism shared via online platforms is believed to have negatively influenced the public perception of the region. Furthermore, a shift in travel preferences among the younger demographic has been identified, with many individuals opting for international destinations such as Japan and Thailand instead of local coastal retreats. The influence of social media has been cited as a contributing factor that has potentially harmed the reputation of the area, leading to a preference for foreign travel over domestic excursions. This transition in consumer behavior has necessitated a reevaluation of how the region is marketed to both local and international audiences.

In response to these challenges, statements were issued by Kenting National Park Headquarters Deputy Director Tseng Tien-ting. A comprehensive plan for the development of tourism throughout the current year has been released. It was emphasized by the deputy director that the brand identity of the region must be transformed to ensure that potential visitors perceive the destination as one of significant value. The proposed strategy is expected to focus on the optimization of existing facilities and the promotion of low-carbon tourism initiatives along the west coast. Improvements to parking infrastructure and the modernization of service counters are also included in the revitalization agenda. The overarching objective of these efforts is to transition away from traditional tourism models toward deeper, experience-based travel.

The Pingtung County Transportation and Tourism Division has maintained that the natural beauty of the area remains a significant asset that should not be overlooked due to short-term statistical fluctuations. The provincial government has indicated that future strategies will prioritize the overall branding of the region, the enhancement of multilingual services, and the deployment of smart tourism guides. These measures are intended to attract a higher volume of international visitors and improve the general experience for all guests. It is hoped that by integrating technology and improving service standards, a more sustainable tourism model can be established for the peninsula.

While challenges persist in the southern regions, other parts of the country have received positive international attention. It was noted that Taipei and Orchid Island, also known as Lanyu, were featured in a list of premier travel destinations for the current year. Taipei was recognized alongside prominent cities such as Seoul and Kyoto as an urban center rich in cultural heritage, history, and modern opportunities for adventure. The city was praised for its democratic environment, friendly atmosphere, and renowned culinary scene. Additionally, the availability of high-quality hiking trails and a vibrant independent music scene were cited as reasons for its status as a top-tier travel destination.

Orchid Island was specifically recommended as a top choice for travelers seeking unique island and beach experiences in Asia. The island is home to the Tao people, also referred to as the Yami, who are well known for their intricately crafted wooden canoes. It was suggested that the island serves as an ideal location for the exploration of indigenous culture and the appreciation of breathtaking natural landscapes. This recognition by international travel publications serves as a contrast to the difficulties faced by other domestic sites, illustrating the diverse nature of the tourism industry within the country.

The contrast between the decline in Kenting and the accolades received by Taipei and Orchid Island highlights the complexities of the current travel market. While certain areas must undergo rigorous rebranding and infrastructure improvements to regain their former popularity, other regions continue to thrive by leveraging their unique cultural and natural assets. The efforts led by the Kenting National Park Headquarters and the Pingtung County Government are viewed as essential steps toward reversing the downward trend. By focusing on quality of service and the depth of the visitor experience, it is anticipated that the region may eventually see a recovery in its annual visitor statistics.
